After 5 Years and 9 Months

Five Years and Nine months ago...I received a phone call from our stake president, President Christensen, asking if I might meet with him that evening. He asked me to bring my husband with me. Randy called him back and let him know that we had just purchased tickets to a movie. President said he would be waiting for us at the church upon our return. I assumed that I would be issued a stake calling and was quite nervous about the fact.

After the movie, Randy threw a tie on his green flannel shirt (who does that?)  President Christensen was at the church waiting for us as promised. He invited Randy into his office first... then after what seemed an eternity, asked me to join them. He then explained that Randy had been chosen by the Lord to serve as Bishop of the Hidden Valley 1st Ward. He did not ask us to think about it for a day or two, he did not need to... He asked if Randy would accept this calling. In faith, and through tear-filled eyes, Randy responded, “yes.”

Needless to say, he replaced his green flannel shirt with a white shirt and tie and what I refer to as his new Bishop super suit. This was a giant responsibility; when he was tempted to feel inadequate or overwhelmed, I would remind him as he lifted this super suit coat onto his shoulders, that he was now incredi-bishop!

We might have smiled about this, but it is not far from the truth. There is something very real about a seemingly “ordinary” man who is able to do extraordinary things as he accepts the mantel and authority of a bishop and who humbly and prayerfully goes about his duties.

I remember one occasion after an especially difficult week as a bishop, he gave me a big hug and asked in complete sincerity, “what can I do to be a better husband?” I don’t remember how I responded, but I do remember how I felt. My heart just melted. When a man loves the Lord with all his heart, serves with all his might, honors the Priesthood that he holds, and keeps his temple covenants, He IS the best husband he can be.

Randy’s bishop super suit is now a little worn out.  He was released today. I know the Lord is pleased; “Well done, thou good and faithful bishop.”
